Jennings Creek Stormwater and Safety Improvements

Jennings Creek Stabilization

Jennings Creek is one of the primary creeks on campus that conveys stormwater to Lake Alice. Stormwater flows have caused substantial erosion and damage to the structural elements of the culvert that carries stormwater from north of Museum Road to Jennings Creek, and ultimately to Lake Alice. This erosion has created a substantial safety issue in addition to impacting the function of this critical component of the UF stormwater system.

Construction work will be underway effective December 22, 2025, to conduct repairs to stabilize this pipe, reduce future erosion and replant native vegetation. This work is estimated to be complete by July 2026

To pursue a sustainable resolution to these stormwater issues, there will be noticeable impacts to existing vegetation within the project area. While removal of invasive species is a top priority during this project, some removal of existing, native trees and lower lying vegetation will be required within the project area due to damage caused by erosion and necessary construction-related impacts. The stabilization of the slopes along the creek that will be realized through this project will allow for improved tree health and the purposeful establishment of longer-lived species as part of the future replanting efforts.

In addition to supporting long-term environmental restoration, select tree removals are necessary to address life safety considerations associated with ongoing erosion and slope instability along Jennings Creek. Long-term stormwater impacts have affected vegetation in portions of the project area, reducing overall stability over time. Many of the trees identified for removal have compromised root systems and are at increased risk of failure, particularly during heavy rainfall or storm events. Removing these impacted trees reduces potential hazards to nearby infrastructure and pedestrian areas, while supporting the long-term stabilization of the creek corridor.

This work is being conducted following recommendations made in the Lake Alice Watershed Management Plan as part of a holistic solution to the long-term health and functionality of our campus water system.

McKnight Brain Institute Loading Dock Stabilization

As part of the broader Jennings Creek stormwater and safety improvements, stabilization work is also planned along McKnight Creek near the McKnight Brain Institute loading dock. Addressing erosion in this area will reduce potential life safety concerns and protect nearby facilities from future impacts. This work supports long-term creek health and overall site safety, and is being completed as part of a coordinated effort with the Jennings Creek improvements.
